DPD RI Urges the Government to Stop Illegal Fishing in Natuna

Jakarta (23/3) - Vice Chairman of the House of Regional Representatives (DPD) RI, Farouk Muhammad fully supports the government's efforts in order to prevent Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in Natuna.

He appreciates the Foreign Ministry who had sent a diplomatic note on action taken by Chinese coastguard to thwart the arrest of illegal vessel KMK way Fey in Natuna waters.

"Theft of fish in the Natuna waters by fishing boats from China has not only taken Indonesia's marine resources, but also have violated the state sovereignty because it had entered the territorial waters of Indonesia. I also deplore the coastguard of China who had protected the perpetrators of crimes," stated the Vice Chairman of DPD RI, Farouk Muhammad (23/03/2016) in Mataram.

Farouk who completed a Master of Criminal Justice Administration from OCU USA explained the Fishermen boat and the defense of Chinese Coast Guard has violated the Act No. 43/2008 on the State Territory which in article 7 stated that the State Indonesia has sovereign rights and other rights in the Territorial Jurisdiction. However, although the Natuna is within Indonesia, but China still considers it as their sea territory.

The Chinese government has also violated the provisions of the International United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) related to the threat of using force against the sovereignty, territorial integrity or political independence of the coastal State. Indonesia has the exclusive economic zone which covers 200 miles of shoreline. In the zone, the coastal State has the right to the natural resources therein, entitled to use its legal policy, freedom of navigating, flying over, or planting the cables or pipes.

"Illegal fishing has caused tremendous loss for the state. Repression, supervision and termination of the illegal fishing requires seriousness from the government and all parties concerned," said this senator of NTB.

Farouk suggested the government to strengthen the surveillance fleet in Natuna, and should seriously expressed their objection to the government of china on illegal fishing activities carried out by China’s fishermen.
