National Workshop “Consolidation of Democracy and National Identity”

Jakarta, dpd.go.idTHE GROUP of DPD RI in People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) secondly held a National Workshop at Nusantara IV Building, Parliament Complex Senayan Jakarta. The event themed “The Fifth Amendment of the 1945 Constitution: Consolidation of Democracy and National Identity” began with a speech by Vice-Chairman of MPR, Hajrianto Y. Thohari that conveyed the Revocation of Decree of MPR RI concerning Appreciation and Practice Guideline of Pancasila (Ekaprasetya Pancakarsa) then continued with the beating of gongs by the Chairman of DPD RI, Irman Gusman as a mark of the opening of the National Workshop, Thursday (15/12/2011).

In the same occasion Irman Gusman also delivered his oration. He said democracy is the “Golden Bridge” to prosperity and justice. “The political system in our country, that is democracy, not only affects the change in the state system but also can stimulate economic development so that the people are more prosperous,” explained Irman. Related to the regional issues, Irman argued that the presence of DPD RI has raised people’s expectations in the regions where the interests and problems there can be raised and contended at the national level.

Bambang Soeroso as Chairman of the Group of DPD in MPR also gave a speech as an introduction to the event. “The National Workshop was organized as a tangible manifestation of our concern as the national sovereign holders to provide smart ideas and enrichment to the political system and constitutional system through the Fifth Amendment of the 1945 Constitution”, he said.

The proposed Fifth Amendment of the 1945 Constitution is expected to be a solution for the national problems which are reflected in the 10 issues that have been normed into the proposed comprehensive amendment, among others:

  1. Strengthening the Presidential System;
  2. Strengthening the Legislative Institutions
  3. Strengthening the Local Autonomy;
  4. Individual Presidential Candidate;
  5. National Elections and Local Elections;
  6. Previlegiatum Forum;
  7. Optimizing the Role of the Constitutional Court;
  8. The Addition on Article of Human Rights;
  9. The Addition on State Commission Chapter;
  10. Sharpening the Chapter on Education and Economy.
