Dialogue is the Best Way for Papua

Jakarta, dpd.go.id – Escalation of violence in Papua increased in recent weeks. The series of the Papua conflict is a result of development that considered inappropriate for the people of Papua expectations. LIPI has made a study related to the causes of violent conflict in Papua. The result, there are four fundamental problems that must be resolved during this government. Muridan S. Widjojo, researcher from LIPI includes four issues in Papua Road Map. First, the problem of marginality and discrimination, second, the problem of development failure, third, and fourth issues of human rights, political failures are often ideologized in Papua with Papua Merdeka, there still exists a huge wall between Papua and Jakarta, it was revealed by Muridan S. Widjojo held in Indonesian Perspective DPD RI with Smart FM radio in the DPD RI, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday (04/11/2011).

According to Muridan, to overcome those four issues needs a specific approach. Approach to the Papuans was not able to run on their own but need to do an intense dialogue, “dialogue is the best way, because the dialogue is not patronizing anyone, dialogue paves the way”, said Muridan. Even the President ensured the ongoing dialogue process. A variety of programs to accelerate development in the Eastern world in Indonesia continues to be done. For example are using a special autonomy and Instruction of accelerated development.

Paulus Yohanes Sumino (DPD member from Papua) mentions the background that caused the conflict in Papua is the history in the past, then the political process that is not finished, because Papua has its own characteristics on culture and specific culture that is different from other areas that should be respected. Each disappointment eventually expanded into the conflict in Papua. Paulus supports Muridan’s statement that there should be a dialogue which is sitting equally together, “dialogue is the key word, dialogue between the central government, local government and the Papuan people, it takes a long time, but dialogue must begin,” said Paul Sumino. “Although DPD RI only has a little authority but provide space for dialogue even though there has not found the meeting point,” he added.

For peace of Papua many solutions has been proposed, such as Radhar Panca Dahana (humanist) that to overcome Papua conflict need four approaches which are first, cultural structural approach (give empathy and appreciate the culture and the culture of the papua people), the second creates fraternity, feel for a kinship by fixing the infrastructure of papua so that it is equivalent to other regions, and the third approach is politics, “restore the dignity of the people of Papua, who they feel lost and trampled on and dare to give freedom to the people of Papua to appreciate their own way” said Radhar.
