I Wayan Sudirta: There are 84 Laws that Disserve the Regions

Jakarta, dpd.go.idBASED ON studies of DPD RI and 29 university partners throughout Indonesia, there are at least 84 laws that disserve the regions. That was said by I Wayan Sudirta, Chairman of the Bill Drafting Committee (PPUU) of DPD RI, in the opening of the National Workshop in DPD RI, Parliamentary Complex Senayan – Jakarta, Wednesday (10/19/2011).

According to Wayan, the workshop themed “Grand Design of National Law Development and Central-Local Relations” is an attempt to analyze many regulatory issues that overlap between sectors, as well as rules that cannot be applied in the regions.

“The new Law of the Establishment of Regulation and Legislation (Law of PPP No. 12 Year 2011) for example, divides local regulations to Provincial Regulation and District Regulation, this gives implications for the authority of district/city autonomy increasingly eroded because it is taken by the province,” explained the senator from Bali.

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of DPD RI, La Ode Ida, conveyed the importance of considering regional interests in any decision-making and legislation. He hoped this workshop will produce strategic considerations concerning the central-local relationship, as well as the ideal position of DPD RI in the Constitution. “It must be kept in mind that Indonesia exists because of the regions,” asserted La Ode.

This national workshop will be held from 19 to October 21, 2011, and attended by representatives from universities, NGOs, academia, research institutes, Constitutional Forum, as well as legal experts. (saf)
