Deficit of Cultural Values Raises Vandalism in the Name of Religion

Jakarta, dpd.go.id – INCIDENT of destruction of statues some time ago in Purwakarta, indicates that our community or nation is currently undergoing a cultural deficit. In fact, humans will live quiet and peaceful when they are cultured.

That was conveyed by Zastrouw Ngatawi when became a speaker in Talk Show of DPD RI Indonesias Perspective themed “Stop Destroying Arts and Cultures in the Regions” in the Press Room of DPD RI, Parliament Complex, Senayan Jakarta (23/09/2011). Associated with the case that carries the name of Islam as a religion that prohibits the manufacture of statue, the humanist gave his views.

“It is true that Islam forbids the existence of statue. But we must address this matter wisely, not by anarchy, because anarchy itself is not justified by Islam,” said Zastrouw.

However, according to the viewpoint of Muhammad Al-Khaththath, it is not a cultural issue, but rather the problem of coercion in making statue from a Regent to the people who reject the presence of the statue. “Is it worth for a regent to impose installing statue while the community refuses the statue?” Said the Secretary General of the Islamic People’s Forum firmly. According to him, the attitude of the regent ignores the aspirations of Purwakarta community and ignores the teachings of Islam, in fact he has been warned. However, Al-Khaththath also rejects violence committed by the people in Purwakarta.

Asvi Warman Adam also deplored the actions of law enforcement which was conducted by breaking the law. Related to the plan of making statue in Purwakarta, according to the historian of LIPI (Indonesia Institute of Sciences), there are several points that must be considered, namely the objective of making the statue, the value of the statue, the placement of the statue and also the quality of the statue. “As long as the statue has the virtue needed to say, I think it does not matter,” he said. Further, Asvi hopes this incident can serve as a lesson that making statue in a region should be discussed together.

The public domain that cannot be forced into the subjective domain should also be understood together. Like the case of Purwakarta in which according to Radhar Panca Dahana is an objective public realm but used in the subjective realm in the view of one particular group, giving rise to vandalistic action. “People may protest, but not necessarily in vandalistic ways because the vandalism itself will be rejected. There are still politer ways to protest,” the man of letters asserted.
