Be Wary on Nations Disintegration in Boundaries

Jakarta, dpd.go.idHOUSE of Regional Representative (DPD) RI expects the government really serious in dealing with the country’s borders. The threat of disintegration in many border areas indicates dissatisfaction of regions towards the central government. Chairman of Committee I DPD RI, Dani Anwar, judged that for 65 years these border areas were not well managed. DPD regretted that DPR has not discussed the bill on the border territory that has been submitted by DPD. “In accordance with Law No. 27 Article 147 Year 2009, a bill proposed by DPD should be discussed in plenary session of DPR to be approved or rejected, but DPR never discussed it until now.” That statement was delivered by Dani in Radio Talk Show of DPD RI “Indonesian Perspectives” entitled Equality of House of Representatives to Develop Regions in the Press Room of DPD RI, Parliament Complex, Friday (08/05/11).

Problems in boundaries arise not only due to the uneven development, according to Dani, it is also because the boundaries are not stated clearly in the constitution. Dani hoped that the government is more sensitive and moves quickly to handle these issues. “The government should change the approach pattern from the security approach to welfare approach for the border regions,” Dani added.

It was agreed by Sutrisno, secretary of the National Agency for Border Management (BNPP), who also suggested the government not to be economy-minded in doing development in border areas. Sutrisno explained some goals of BNPP, i.e., managing the State boundaries and improving the welfare of the people in the border areas.

Ikrar Nusa Bakti analyzed several causes of these problems, among which are the very sectorial development and lack of sense of belonging. In addition, development in the border areas should not only physical development but also human development and the adequacy of their daily needs. It is very important, because the border area is the gate of Indonesia that needs more attention. “The government should conduct an integrated development in the border areas,” said the political analyst of LIPI (Indonesian Sciences Institute).
