Press Independence and Challenge of Democracy
Jakarta, dpd.go.id – MASS MEDIA are widely criticized due to news related to Nazaruddin some time ago. The press is considered to begin ignoring the code of ethics and abuse the freedom they have. However, according to Alirman Sori, Senator from West Sumatra Province, the opinion should be reviewed. “What the mass media do is still reasonable and justifiable,” said Alirman in Talk Show of DPD RI “Indonesian Perspective” themed “What’s Up with Democracy and the Mass Media” held in the Press Room of DPD RI Jakarta on Friday (15/7/11).
In spite of all criticism towards the mass media, Alirman constantly supports the responsible existence of press. According to him, the state requires the presence of the press. “But the press should not be allergic to criticism and has to maintain honesty and fairness of information,” Alirman added.
“Indeed, the press has to be criticized,” Wina Armada Sukardi (Chairman of the Commission on Law and Legislation of Press Council) expressed his opinion on what happened to the press today. The parties who feel aggrieved due to the press reports can complain it to the Press Council. Press freedom, according to Wina, should be used profusely in the public and the nation interest. It is common if the press criticizes the ruling party in the government. Associated with the press that often takes news from other media, Wina stated, “Taking the news from other media is allowed, as long as listing the source.”
On the other hand, Benny Kabur Harman, Chairman of Commission III DPR RI/Democratic Party Faction, gave clarification over allegations that he and his party are anti with press freedom. “We do not deny the existence of the press. Without press freedom, democracy will not be advanced.” Benny explained. Benny also requested the press to consider freedom of a responsible and to subject to the code of ethics of the press and the Press Law.
