Intsiawati: The fuel (BBM) subsidy should still be applied

Jakarta, dpd.go.id – One of the problems in Indonesia that recently disturbing the public is the issue of rising fuel (BBM) prices or the withdrawal of fuel subsidies. The increase in fuel prices is believed will result in wide impact for society, especially in terms of economy such as the decline in production activity and the increase of other prices. Is the increase of fuel price a wise policy for the people? Three sources who attended the DPD Talk Show, Perspective of Indonesia (01/07/11) conveyed their argumentation in the theme “Unravel the Problems of Fuel (BBM) Subsidy” in the Press Room DPD, Senayan Jakarta.

Fluctuations in fuel prices, for Arif Budimanta (Member of Commission XI DPR RI / F-PDIP), is a commonplace. The problem is the transparency of government on the basic costs of fuel. “So far, the government never provided transparency on the basic costs of fuel, even though it should be done by the government,” Arif explained. Arif also said that the increase of fuel prices will erode the purchasing power of the people and that means impoverishment structured. Raising the fuel prices represents the government as pragmatic and populist. “Moreover, the timing for the increase of fuel price is over,” he said. Arif, who also disagreed with the restrictions on fuel, offered a solution, namely by controlling and supervising the fuel regularly.

Regional aspirations that was represented by Intsiawati Ayus (Member of Committee II DPD Riau Province) would prefer some measure of justice for the distribution of fuel-producing regions. “All this time anomalies occur, there is a shortage of fuel in producing regions because of the quota given to the producing regions do not correspond with the required consumption,” said Intsiawati. Regarding fuel subsidies, Intsiawati argued that fuel subsidies still need to be applied.

Another one is Kurtubi’s arguments, the oil analysts. In his argument, no matter if the government raised the fuel prices ranging from Rp Rp 1000.00 through 1500.00, as long as the government explained to the people honestly and transparently, and must be followed by the return of benefits to the people in the form of adequate infrastructure development. In addition to these short-term solutions, Kurtubi who observed that the problem of fuel prices is a matter of mismanagement in the Oil and Gas Law No. 22/2001, recommended that the government should not use the policy that will detriment the government. “Withdraw the oil law soon,” said Kurtubi.
