IAGI: Geothermal Mining Regulations Needs a Review

Jakarta.dpd.go.id – Indonesian Geologists Association (IAGI) suggested revision on regulations concerning geothermal mining in Indonesia. The proposed recommendation was submitted by the Chairman of IAGI, Lambok Hutasoit, in a hearing meeting (RDP) of Special Committee on Mining DPD RI in Parliament Complex Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (12/7/11).

In the meeting led by Budi Doku, Senator from Gorontalo, Lambok described Indonesia as one of countries that has the largest potential of geothermal in the world. “The potential of geothermal in Indonesia reaches 40% of the world’s geothermal potential,” Lambok explained.

According to him, the potential that can be utilized is only 4% and the results of government programs to run Geothermal Road-map for the period 2004-2025 are still far from target, and it is due to several constraints originating from the regulatory aspects in which the lack of synchronization between one regulation and another regulation in the implementation of geothermal development.

Besides the obstacle of investment and technology aspects, “In addition to technology aspect we are also still lacking in terms of human resources,” said the man who graduated from the University of Illinois, USA (1986). He also emphasized that the long exploration period causes less interest from domestic investors.

Based on those constraints, in addition to the need of review on the existing regulations, IAGI concluded that the government should increase the quality and quantity of human resources.

Agree with the explanation of the Chairman of IAGI, Paul Sumino (Senator from Papua) suggested a special agenda required to discuss the potential of geothermal contained in Law no. 27 Year 2003. Meanwhile Ferry F.X. Tinggogoy (Senator from North Sulawesi) questioned the clear comparison that distinguishes the use of geothermal energy with other energy sources.

“If we use others energy, it is much more expensive,” said one representative of IAGI. He added, if compared in terms of economy, geothermal energy is a renewable alternative energy and more environmentally friendly than other energy sources, “I concluded geothermal as a polar energy, in my life.”
