The Working Meeting of Committee IV DPD RI with the Minister of Agriculture: DPD Questions Food Self-Sufficiency Projection
Jakarta: The self-sufficiency target became an urgent hope to be manifested considering that food is the basic needs as an agricultural country, agricultural sector is the backbone of the nation’s food security and economy. In the Working Meeting Committee IV DPD RI with the Minister of Agriculture, Ir. H. Suswono, said that the President has instructed the self-sufficiency target of 10 million tons of rice and self-sufficiency of meat by 2014. Located in GBHN Building Nusantara V, Parliament complex in Senayan, the meeting was led by John Pieris, Committee IV Chairman DPD RI, Monday, (06/13/2011).
“Minister of Agriculture should really implement the president’s instruction, so that the self-sufficiency of 10 million tonnes of rice are accomplished,” says Rosman Djohan (DPD RI Senator of Bangka Belitung province).
For the success of these targets, the minister of agriculture has allocated fertilizer subsidy of Rp. 16.99 trillion and seed subsidy of Rp. 279.9 billion. In addition, the Minister of Agriculture also continues to encourage farmers to absorb KUR (People’s Business Credit) and KUPS (Cattle Breeding Business Credit) in cooperation with banks.
Minister of Agriculture continued that following the definition of UN food agency, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), now in fact Indonesia has been self-sufficient in rice because it can cover 90% of the needs of the domestic product. “The key is in Bulog as regulators in absorbing the crop farmers, imports are usually done if it fails to achieve expected stock,”said Suswono.
In the future, Minister of Agriculture promised to make breakthroughs in agriculture so that the food stock remains safe. In addition, currently the Law of protection and empowerment of farmers is under preparation as to protect farmers from several situations that often harm them. (SAF)
