Papua Caucus in Parliament of RI Refused the MRP Establishment in West Papua

Papua Caucus in Parliament of RI firmly refused the establishment of the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) in the province of West Papua. The statement was submitted in press conference which held at the Press Room of DPD, Senayan, Jakarta (06/17). Sofia Maipauw, senator of DPD from West Papua accompanied by the Coordinator of Papua Caucus in DPR, Vice-Chairman of DPR of West Papua, attended the event to confirm the presence of MRP Papua which illegal. “We are gathered to discuss the Papuan People’s Assembly that there was no strong legal basis over their inauguration in West Papua,” said Sofia.

On the occasion, the Coordinator of Papua Caucus in DPR, Paskalis Kossay considered that approval of the establishment MRP of West Papua meant the government was not consistent in developing Papua. Paskalis said that MRP has been formed with Decree of Home Affairs Minister, and then appeared other MRP in West Papua which was opposed by the Papuan people.

“There is only one MRP in Papua and other MRP which established in West Papua is illegal and should be dissolved,” said Paskalis

Vice Chairman of the House of Representative of West Papua (DPRPB), Jimmy D. Ijie, said that DPRPB agreed that there is only one MRP in Papua. The establishment of MRP PB is not based on a strong law. The reason based on the provisions of article 75 Government Regulation no 54 of 2004 concerning the form of MRP that establishment of MRP PB is the MRP of Papua or central, not the governor and central governments. “In addition, we decided that there was only one MRP in order to maintain the cultural unity of the Papuans,” said Jimmy.

Based on these problems, Papua Caucus in Parliament of RI urged the President to immediately discontinue the efforts of Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) establishment in West Papua Province by elements that are not responsible. In addition, they asked Home Affairs Minister to prevent the establishment of the MRP in West Papua Province by not authorize the MRP establishment in the province of West Papua.
