Government Welcomes the Bill about Medical Education
Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih welcomes the initiative of DPR to start a discussion of the bill on Medical Education. “This shows the amount of attention to things related to medical education also the quality and the role of doctors, dentists, and graduates in health development,” she said in a meeting that was held by DPD RI, Monday (13 / 6) at Parliament Complex of DPD RI, Senayan – Jakarta.
The Medical education is a specific form of higher education in which academic education carried out together with education of profession. Therefore, Endang said that the Government agreed to arrange them in its Law as Lex Specialist of the Law on Higher Education.
Currently there are about 92,000 doctors across Indonesia. 65% are on the island of Java, 16% on the island of Sumatera and about 5.5% in Eastern Indonesia. While the number of dentists currently around 20,655 people where 14 357 are in Java and in eastern Indonesia with less than 5% only.
Hence, Endang thinks there is a need to set quotas for prospective students who come from certain region in Indonesia. “So it is an affirmative program to achieve equal opportunity to obtain medical education and later on even distribution of medical services,” she explained.
The discussion between the Ministries conducted with intensive stakeholders nearly during the last one month has already led to substance of agreement from the Government that has been poured into the Inventory List Problems (DIM) and ready to be discussed together.
“The government believes that the Members of DPR together with the Government will basically devote their attention in discussing this bill so that differences of opinion is not an obstacle in completing the discussion of” she said.
