Could the National Examamination (UN) be Abolished?
The National Examination (UN) has just been implemented, but echoes of the questions whether UN is still effective for our education is still frequently discussed. As in the DPD RI Committee III Meeting that was held on last Monday (6/6/11) with the theme “Evaluating the Implementation of UN 2010/2011 DKI Jakarta Province.” Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) that was held in PPUU Meeting Room on 3rd Floor, Building B DPD RI invited four speakers, namely Dr. Ir. Muhammad Anis, M.Ed. (Supervisory Education Unit, University of Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Qomari Anwar, Toenggoel P. Siagian, M.S., M.Ed., and Nani Nurani Muksin (The Board of Education of DKI Jakarta Province).
In general, the implementation of the UN this year is considered better than the implementation of the previous years. This was revealed by Dr. Ir. Muhammad Anis. However, implementation of the UN this year does not mean to run without obstacles. “There are still many obstacles encountered in implementing the UN this year,” said Anis. Some of these obstacles include inaccurate data, poor paper quality, printing errors, lack of responsibility and problem sheets, etc.
Every year, there are many students who do not pass the UN. In response, Qomari Anwar proposed that the government to pay attention to the teacher and school which has poor quality “Teachers need to be considered more seriously, not just in terms of welfare, but also their quality,” said Qomari Anwar.
In terms of the effectiveness of the UN, Toenggoel argued that so far the UN has not managed to achieve the common goal of implementation of the UN itself. “The validity of graduation should be questioned,” said Toenggoel. Therefore, Toenggoel agreed if the UN is abolished even if he also argued that the possibility of abolishing the UN is very small because the parties who got the benefit will not just agree. In his point of view, the National Exam is just a consequence of the national education system in Indonesia. “We better figure out how to make good, interesting, challenging schools, so teachers and students love to be at school,” he added. In addition, he also suggested that the UN funds are allocated for schools constructions.
In the RDPU led by Istibsyaroh (Chairwoman of Committee III, Senator of DPD RI from East Java Province), we can conclude that the Committee III DPD RI supports the abolition of the UN.
