Implementing Pancasila (The Five Principles) with Scientific Pancasila

Dilution of the implementation of Pancasila values becomes serious challenge for Indonesia. This was reviewed in the second session of seminar held by DPD RI in commemoration of National Awakening Day and the making of Pancasila, Thursday, 19/5/2011 themed “Indonesian Parliament’s Revival as the Basic Sustainer of Actualization of Pancasila Culture in Society, Nation, and State’s Life”. Yudi Latif, Executive Director of the Reform Institute, initiated a new approach to Pancasila called the scientific Pancasila. Many people talk about Pancasila, but there is no serious attempt to implement its values. Hence, it needs a scientific approach to Pancasila, said Yudi Latif. According to him, the neglect of Pancasila follows the failure of rooting and implementation of Pancasila ideology.

As the second speaker, Dr. Azis Syamsuddin, Vice Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives, raised the issue of the importance of parliament’s revival in order to provide benefits to the community. Parliament is said to have practiced Pancasila if they have provided benefits to the community. If the parliament does not work in a good synergy, everything will then be in vain,” he added. Besides, Azis also suggested that parliament should utilize all of potentials to implement the Pancasila values.

Today, people are highly yearning for Pancasila, especially the implementation of the first principle. This view was presented by Wahyu Muryadi, Chief Editor of Tempo Magazine. According to him, parliament was not much noise in case of destruction related to the belief, for example, Ahmadiyah. Our government is powerless against anarchism, whereas the state should not lose in facing the religious anarchism.” In relation to the implementation of the first principle, the government should be cautious of brainwashing movement that recently emerges on the surface. Moreover, the trend of radicalism and intolerance are getting higher.

In line with Wahyu Muryadi, Bambang Soeroso, Chairman of the Group of DPD in the People’s Consultative Assembly, argued that the neglect of Pancasila occurs due to morality shifting. “Aspect of character is no longer taught in school. Our moral and cultural values are also increasingly faded,” he said. (AF / SAF)
