The DPD Held an Environmental Workshop
The House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia and Korea’s Seoul National University organized a workshop with the theme “Policy and Green Growth.” The purpose of this workshop explored the perspective of policies, strategies and projections of its implementation, primarily associated with climate change, global warming and forest carbon. Workshop held in Nusantara V Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday (28/02). The event was opened by the Chairman of the DPD RI Irman Gusman and attended by senators of DPD RI, Chairman of Commission IV and Chairman of the Commission III of the DPR, Minister of Forestry of Indonesia, Ambassador of South Korea, the governors, Leadership of DPRD Provinces and the rectors of the University.
In his speech, Chairman of DPD RI Irman Gusman said that the DPD RI really pays attention to environmental issues. This attention is one of constitutional duty of the DPD RI, which is related to environmental and natural resource management, especially related to policy development.
The choice to cooperate with South Korea is because Korea’s Parliament has published the law on the Green Economy that is supported by the current President of Korea, YM. Lee Myung Bak, that is by involving the role of universities, communities, and other elements in accordance with the mechanism of work in Korea. “DPD RI really appreciates a step forward that has been taken by the South Korean parliament and tries to encourage the green growth concept is also applied in Indonesia,” said Irman Gusman.
Previously, DPD RI has undertaken various efforts since the implementation of Global Climate Change Conference in December 2007 in Bali and the Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 2009. “DPD also continuous to develop thought and attention to global climate issues, and especially today, we will also discuss about the forestry carbon emissions,” he said.
DPD RI involvement in environmental issues intended to improve Indonesia’s environment which according to Environmental Performance Index (EPI) the Indonesian index ratings decreased from 102 of 149 countries with score of 66.2 in 2008 to rank 134 of 163 with a score of 44.6 in 2010 from the highest score of 100. This index is usually updated every two years.
Furthermore, Irman Gusman said that without understanding of environment that is more holistic then the economic and social development will threaten human survival. “Development cannot be allowed to grow linearly at just one point, namely the economy, the concept of Green Growth is very suitable to be applied in Indonesia’s sustainable development strategy,” explained Irman Gusman.
According to Irman, the legislature has a strong capital to initiate green economic policy. Environmental conservation should be initiated through concrete actions. “Not only for the protection of the environment but also gain economic benefits”, said Irman Gusman.
Meanwhile, Minister of Forestry of Indonesia, Zulkifli Hasan became the keynote speaker at the workshop. The role of tropical forests adds the durability of current and future. Forest will also maintain the balance of local and regional climate. The role of forests in absorbing carbon, based on data from FAO, it has predicted that global forests can absorb carbon of 2.6 million tons per year.
Zulkifli added that the current forest issue is illegal logging, timber theft as well as law enforcement which is still weak in solving the case of forestry. “Therefore it needs a complete willingness of the stakeholders, and I am grateful in an event held by the DPD was attended by the governor,” he said.
