Jakarta, March 5^th, 2011. Chairman of the House of Regional Representative of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) Irman Gusman confirmed that Islam is a religion that upholds peace and justice. Thus, the Chairman of DPD RI said when giving a speech in an international seminar entitled, “Islam, Peace, and International Justice: Issues, urgency, and Challenges”. The seminar was organized by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iranian Embassy) and PP Muhammadiyah at Hotel Sahid Jaya Jakarta.

The seminar was also attended by Chairman of MPR RI Taufik Kiemas, Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Din Syamsuddin, and Muslim scholars Azumardi Azra, which are trying not only to discuss but also to explain the relationship between Islamic thought, peace and justice. Today, especially after the attacks on the World Trade Center (9 September incident), Islam is labeled as a terrorist religion. Acts of terrorism and violence are always linked to Islam.

Islamic teachings about humanity has become a reference in the breeding efforts of human rights on other civilization, particularly Western civilization. Therefore, it is not appropriate and relevant if it is associated with Islamic teachings or religious violence.

“The trend is further strengthens a study which says that the modern world is inseparable from the law of dependence of small countries to large countries”, said Irman.

“This is then that enrich the fundamentalist movements and radicalism and terrorism in various parts of the world because of dissatisfaction with the authorities and the develop system that bring forth those injustices”, said Irman.

Irman stated that democracy is compatible (can go hand in hand) with Islamic teachings. This is evidenced in Indonesia. Universal principles of democracy are carried out by Muslims in Indonesia seriously without forgetting Islam as a basic belief system which is essential to the oneness of God.
