The Riots of Religious Background Became Our Responsibility
The government must act firmly and do not burden the society’s future by presenting a conflict that keep continuing, related to the riot case with religious background lately. The riot issue that happened is not just being the police task, the root causes have to be completely resolved, namely the existence of Ahmadiyah itself.
The statement appeared in Indonesian Perspective dialogue titled “The Case of Cikeusik, An Expensive Price of Diversity” in the press room of DPD building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta (11/02). The speakers who attended were Laode Ida (the Vice Chairman of DPD RI), Abdul Rachman Mas’ud (head of Researcher and Development Center of Religious Life of Ministry of Religious Affairs), Inspector General of Police, Sunarko (Assistant Chief of Police in Field Operations), and Mohammad Sobary (humanist).
Laode Ida concluded that the Ahmadiyah are considered to heretical and rejected by the Indonesian Muslims majority. Defending Ahmadiyah by maintaining the pluralism issue must also respect the majority. “Maintaining the issue of pluralism by maintaining the issue of pluralisme should respect the dominant element. So it is clear that the government should abolish it (Ahmadiyah), “said Laode Ida.
According to Laode Ida what is done by Ahmadiyah in Cikeusik is an effort to spread their conviction so that it made people angry. Laode asked that Ahmadiyah not disrupt the stability of the country. He considered that the riots was as failure part of the religious leaders in maintaining what is considered as the true conviction by them. Therefore, the position of Ahmadiyah in Indonesia should be clear. “Ahmadiyah is a not clear, in order to minimize further contamination of religion, its position should be clarified,” he said.
Mohammad Sobary asked people did not blame the police officers in two riots that occurred in Banten and Temanggung. The problem lied in the level of policy, especially about the religion. According to Sobary, the policy makers at the top level did not mature. “The key lies on the maturity of the policy makers, do not blame the police, if the policy was fair, the police may be allowed to sleep at home, taking care of other important matters, the case arose because of the policy garbage,” said Sobary.
However, the police officers still have to be given advice and criticism in order their performance getting better. “Of course the police can be criticized, especially if they are slow,” he said.
Meanwhile, according to Inspector General of Police Sunarko, problem of the riots not only involved the police officers but also cross-sectoral. According to Sunarko, there were weaknesses in anticipation of riots threats and religious violence. “We do introspection about what we have to do, but root of the problem must also be resolved,” said Sunarko.
The root of the problem which meant by Sunarko was the existence of Ahmadiyah itself.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs, Abdul Rachman Mas’ud said in order to prevent the riots of religious matters, and then there must be done the meetings of interfaith leaders periodically. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has a program called peace making that is in order to preserve the peace. So it is not only the responsibility of police officer but also society to maintain security. “The inter-religious youth obtain the skill and knowledge in conducting mediation, this is what should be utilized,” he explained.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs will always examine the Joint Decree of three Ministers (Minister of Religious Affairs, Minister of Home Affairs, and Attorney General about the Muhammadiyah) is effective and dialogue in maintaining concord has been conducted. Abdul Rahman admitted that socialization about Joint Decree on Ahmadiyah was not yet optimal. “Do not talk about Joint Decree, because the Act of it is still lacking and it will be our common agenda to understand and implement the Joint Decree,” said Abdul Rahman.
