Working Meeting of The Committee II of DPD RI with the Ministry of Agriculture Discusses the Bill on Horticulture

Working Meeting of The Committee II of DPD RI with the Ministry of Agriculture discussing the Bill of Horticulture, was attended by Ir.H.Suswono, MMA, Minister of Agriculture of Indonesia, Director General (DIR/GEN) of Horticulture, Ahmad Dymiati, Head of Food Security Agency (BKP), Achmad Suryana, and Director General for Agricultural Processing and Marketing, Zaenal Bacharuddin, led by Chairman of Committee II DPD RI Ir. H. Bambang Susilo, MM, at Committee II meeting room on the 3rd floor of Building B DPD RI, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, (20/07).

Minister of Agriculture stated that horticultural commodities are the potential commodities that have economic value and high market demand with the increase of general growth which includes 323 kinds of commodities consisting of 60 kinds of fruits, 80 kinds of vegetables, 66 kinds of medicinal and 117 kinds of ornamental plants. In general, the bill is good but there are still some things that require consensus and support from all parties, for example; 1) the establishment of national and regional horticultural area; 2) the establishment of fruit and vegetables as part of their staple food with consumption targets ajusted for the needs of public health; 3) the closed and open trading of horticultural products; 4) the standardization and certification of seeds and other production facilities; 5) the construction of a wholesale market that its horticultural trading facilities are in every city around the area of horticulture.

Related to the Bills, Ir.Abraham Liyanto from NTT Province inquired about the bare land found in Indonesia, especially in NTT, how to utilize the bare land with the bill on Horticulture and how to create the access for marketing the products. “How do you contemplate the marketing access to make the people plant, then how about using this farming technologies to utilize the remaining bare land” he said in the meeting.

Ir.H.Suswono, MMA, responded that the suggestions and questions from Senators of the Committee II of DPD RI became the input for the government to discuss the Bill with the House of Representatives because the Bill is an initiative. “Because it’s the DPR’s initiative, if u asked us, this is indeed from the DPR, therefore this is nice, if the DPD and the Government has become a stronghold, for instance becoming one team, at least getting along. Therefore, the discussion will remain between the team of DPD and the Government and from DPR, so there are only two teams, to accelerate the first stage of discussion” he said.

Working Meeting of the Committee II of DPD RI with the Ministry of Agriculture, discussing the Bill on Horticulture, produced an agreement to conduct a joint discussion between the team of Committee II with the Ministry of Agriculture in formulating further discussion of the Bill on Horticulture with the aim to have the political understanding in the Bill’s discussion in the DPR. In addition, in order to socialize the working program, the Ministry of Agriculture in the area will include members of the Committee II of the respective constituencies and if there are things requires further explanation and discussion of problems in the region, the Members of Committee II may submit the issue directly to the Ministry of Agriculture.
