PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE A BETTER DEMOCRACY

As the largest democracy country in the world, America expected to be working with Indonesia to create a better democracy in Indonesia, responsible, and must aim for the prosperity and welfare of the people of Indonesia. This was conveyed by the Chairman of DPD, Irman Gusman when he met Vice Chairman of American Ambassador, Mr. Ted Osius in 8th Floor, Nusantara III Building, Parliament Complex Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (17/02).

In the meeting Irman also revealed that DPD hoping the economic relations of Indonesia and the United States of America can be more improved, considering that Indonesia and the U.S. has its economic advantages of each, with the economic potentials of each country the greater cooperation can be developed.

At the grassroots level, there is need for the DPD to understand other party. These challenges related with people to people content. Even though many Indonesian people come to America or vice versa that can not be classified as small number, there is a lot of misunderstanding between America to Indonesia, and vice versa. Therefore, the Indonesian-American relations still need to be strengthened with the people to people content. At this time we have been able to build a proper understanding of other countries, and then whatever will happen it will be easier to solve problems with our colleagues. But if the understanding itself is wrong, it will make solving the problem will become more difficult.

According to Irman, DPD wishes that in the reign of Barack Obama, relations between Indonesia and the United States of America could be more aimed at “comprehensive partnership”. The potential strategic partnerships Indonesia and the United States would include some strategic aspects, such as, economics and trade, technology transfer, education, health, energy, climate change, entrepreneurship, and politics.

About the planned visit of President of the United States of America to Indonesia, DPD hopes that President Obama’s visiting to Indonesia could bring positive impacts on the relationship of Moslem and west, especially in increasing mutual trust. Therefore, DPD is expecting President Obama can provide an explanation of policies and concrete steps which his government has taken in an effort to improve relations with the Islamic world, include problems that being handled.

DPD also hopes that the U.S. government can assist Indonesia in improving its capacity to deal with problems in regional and international, including the problem of terrorism such as the arrest of the terrorist and prevention of terror acts.

DPD hoping that the U.S. under Obama’s leadership can provide positive images of Uncle Sam’s country and strengthen U.S. relations with its partners, including Indonesia. In the field of socio-cultural, America is Indonesia’s main partner in the field of education. Therefore DPD hopes, the United States of America can expand the cooperation in education sector, for example through scholarships and students exchange between the two countries.
